According to Dr. Sharon Friesen, when students are intellectually engaged they exhibit “an absorbing, creatively energizing focus requiring contemplation, interpretation, understanding, meaning-making and critique which results in a deep, personal commitment to explore and investigate an idea, issue, problem or question for a sustained period of time.” (p. 9)

This can happen through Aesthetic Experiences, Person to Person Contact, Inner Experience, Communing with Nature, Sensory Experiences, Extrasensory Experiences and Ceremony and Ritual.
